Cedar Point Snake River Expedition Takes on Former Paddlewheel Excursions

Cedar Point Snake River Expeditions ?David Chapman (1)

Cedar Point Snake River Expeditions ?David Chapman

David Chapman is the owner of the Facebook Group, Amusement Park Portal, and offers a great collection of historical Cedar Point photos and details. Therefore, we asked for his unique perspective comparing the new Snake River Expeditions to the former Paddlewheel Excursions.

New for 2021, Cedar Point introduces a new boat ride, Snake River Expeditions, in collaboration with the 2019 Forbidden Frontier. Snake River Expeditions takes you on a western cruise thru the snake river. Before you board the boat, guests will walk thru a well themed line and pre-show explaining the adventure that awaits. During your cruise, you will encounter several scenes featuring animatronics and actors.

If you are a fan of the former Paddlewheel excursions that operated at the park 1961-2011, then you will love this updated version. Snake River Expeditions follows the same route around the parks lagoon, but with a totally new story line and scenes. Not only is this attraction good for all ages, but it is a nice way to relax and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the packed midways. Fans of the old version will also notice a few Easter eggs honoring the Paddlewheel Excursions attraction. We do not want to spoil where they all are, but pay attention to some of the props while waiting in line.

210607 Cedar Point Snake River Expeditions Pre-Show Gold

As you enter the line to the ride, you will notice a lot of theming and props geared to a western cruise. Some of the props include a gramophone that plays, a post office, and several pictures. There are two buildings that house the queue, but only one was needed during our visit. The other building features additional theming as well. After you exit the buildings, you will be grouped together with several other people on the boat dock. An actor then confronts you, and goes over some of the rules and gives you additional information about your cruise. After a few moments, another actor will usher you into another building where you will experience the pre-show.

The pre-show consists of a short presentation that explains how you are smuggling gold now instead of going on a standard river tour. Two lucky passengers will be picked to carry gold and dynamite onto the cruise boat. We do not want to give away too much, but there are several other things that happen during the pre-show also.

After instructions, your group is ushered onto the awaiting river boat where you will be seated 2 people per bench. The lucky passengers that were chosen during the pre-show, will be seated up front near the boats captain.

As the boat leaves the dock, you are taken on an adventure around the Cedar Point lagoon (aka Snake River). Guests will come in contact with a bandit who intends on steeling the gold from one of the participants that were chosen. Needless to say, it does not go quite as planned. Also, be on the lookout for snakes! What is nice about this type of set up, is that the story line can easily change whenever they choose to.

We are sure that if you are a fan of the original Paddlewheel Excursions, you will notice that the animatronic scenes are located in the same areas where the old ones were once found. Many of them are similar, and others are totally different. Gone are the days of the Canfield’s and Magee’s feuding down river and spooking away all the game. Snake River Expedition offers a whole new story line now.

We enjoyed the story line, and are sure it will be tweaked over time. Just like the original version, the jokes are cheesy as ever. Included, are pictures of a few of the old scenes from Paddlewheel Excursions and some of the new scenes.

2021 Dorney Park Midway Eats Food Truck Celebrates Cedar Fair

210605 Dorney Park Midway Eats Cedar Point Options ?JR

While visiting the collection of Cedar Fair amusement parks, guests will notice the parks are far from cookie cutter and all offer their own ambiance with different collections of rides and roller coasters, landscape and terrain, and entertainment. In addition, each of the parks caters to their community demographic, offering a variety of menu options guests will typically only find at that park.

For years we have been quite surprised to not see some overlap as far as promotion of the sister parks within each location. However, over the past couple of years, we have started to see some of that interaction in the form of themes. For example, Copperhead Strike at Carowinds, and for the most part the entire new County Fair section, is full of Easter Eggs related to the other parks. The same goes for Mystic Timbers at Kings Island and the new Snake River Expeditions at Cedar Point.

What we have been surprised to not see is more of the sister park menu items and take home products not available across the parks. For example, the Knott’s Berry Farm product line of jams, sauces, and boysenberry items would be great to be able to pick up at your local park. With the cost of shipping, buying directly from the Knott’s online portal is doable, but not always cost effective to ship a heavy bottle of boysenberry concentrate across country.

With all that being said, we are excited to see Dorney Park testing out a new promotion out of their food truck on weekends starting June 5-6 and running through September 4-6, 2021.

The concept is to highlight menu items from the sister Cedar Fair parks. Love the idea to show just a little bit of what guests could expect when visiting the other parks and a chance to promote guests upgrading to a Platinum pass to enjoy the benefit.

Cedar Point | June 5-6

Dorney Park kicked off the promotion highlighting Cedar Point June 5-6. The two menu items of choice were the Four Porksman and Cilantro Lime Garlic Fresh Cut Fries.

The Four Porksman consists of a skewer with onion, mozzarella, meatball, two pepperoni, ham and kielbasa. Then the entire skewer is dipped in funnel cake batter, fried and topped with marinara sauce and Parmesan cheese. Price is $9.99. Note none of the menu items are available with dining plans.

Really cool menu item that was highlighted on the Cedar Point blog during the off-season. Somehow ours was served without marinara, which really would have tied it all together.

210605 Cedar Point Four Porksman ?JR

Then they also served their fresh cut fries topped with a cilantro garlic lime sauce, jalapenos and Parmesan cheese. This was a modified version of the Day of the Dead Fries from the 2020 Tricks and Treats Fall Fest. Price is $8.29.

Good flavor of sauce. Only suggestion would be to serve topped with some minced cilantro.

210605 Cedar Point Cilantro Lime Garlic Fries ?JR

So these two highlighted menu items appear to be coming for the 150th Anniversary Taste of the Point food tour running June 26 through August 15. While we are really excited to see what Cedar Point debuts during the new event, honestly, it seemed like an odd choice of menu items to serve. Not only are both options not even currently served in the park, they are not even considered food that optimize the bread and butter of unique eats at Cedar Point. Looking at menu items that will be highlighted from all the other parks, at least they mostly correlate with options you can get at the parks. We would have expected to see some chili cheese fresh cut fries and a cheese on a stick as Cedar Point staple menu items; but then again maybe they are not all that exciting to try and drum up interest.

Can we also take the time to acknowledge something so small that makes us so happy about the execution of the Midway Eats program? Notice they served the food on the Cedar Point printed paper. This little detail really subtly reminds people of the foods origins. Great job!

Carowinds | June 12-13

For years shrimp has been a staple menu item throughout Carowinds and a specialty menu item guests will typically find during special events. The Dorney Park food truck will offer shrimp & grits and a sweet battered shrimp.

180609 Carowinds Great Carolina Fest Frog Legs ?Butch Bennett

Worlds of Fun | June 18-20

The Dorney Park food truck will offer two of the menu items from Oceans of Fun, the attached water park to Worlds of Fun, that debuted in 2019. Look for a bacon wrapped pork on a stick and the atomic sausage.

190526 Oceans of Fun Bacon Wrapped Pork on a Stick ?Dan Grelinger (3)

The Atomic Sausage sandwich is prepared on a fresh hoagie style white bread bun holding a piece of spicy sausage covered in sliced onions, coleslaw, and a sweet and sour sauce. The sandwich is topped with large dried pepper.

190615 Oceans of Fun Atomic Dog ?Dan Grelinger (2)

Kings Island | June 25-27

Over the past couple of years, we would say the biggest transformation of dining at Kings Island has been at the Miami River Brewhouse. Good food. Ample portions. Indoor seating. The facility in general gets great reviews.

The Dorney Park truck will feature the Miami River Brewhouse London Bridge and the Brewhouse Wings.

210509 Kings Island Miami River Brewhouse London Bridge

We will be really interested to see how Dorney Park presents the Kings Island London Bridge this year. We tried it again this year, and the sandwich was quite the disappointment. In addition to being undercooked, the sandwich is not served with tartar sauce (or any sauce) and getting them to provide some upon request can often be difficult.

Schlitterbahn | July 2-4

We are really excited to get our hands on this week’s menu items, the Texas brisket cheesesteak and stuffed turkey leg. It will be interesting to see how the cheesesteak holds up the area staple.

Kings Dominion | July 9-11

Dorney Park will present the Blues Burger and Dominion Dog from Kings Dominion.

Canada’s Wonderland | July 16-18

If poutine was not on the representative list of menu items from Canada’s Wonderland, our heads would explode. Thankfully the Dorney Park food truck will offer Classic, Pierogi, Cheesesteak, and Hog Town Poutine on this special weekend.

180707 Canada's Wonderland Celebration Canada Classic Poutine ?Coaster Circuits

Then the program pauses for Grand Carnivale, July 24-August 8.

Valleyfair | August 13-15

Dorney Park will celebrate the famous regional Juicy Lucy stuffed burgers in August. The food truck will present the Vegan Juicy Lucy and Hash Brown Bacon Cheeseburger.

California’s Great America | August 20-22

The northern California park will be highlighted with the Banh Mi Wrap and Turkey Burger Sliders.

Knott’s Berry Farm | August 27-29

The gates of heaven have finally opened up and we will get to try boysenberry products on the east coast! Dorney Park will offer Boysenberry BBQ Pulled Pork Brisket, Pastrami Tater Tots, and Boysenberry Dippin* Dots.

Dessert Week | September 4-6

The for sure topper to the end of the season will be highlighted for dessert week! Guests will be able to try the Canada’s Wonderland Deep-Fried Brownie Tart, Cedar Point Cherry Cheesecake Chimichanga (which has been a fan favorite this year), Kings Island blue ice cream, and Knott’s Berry Farm Fun Bun!

170401 Knott's Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival Funbun

If you area fan of Cedar Fair you will see Michigan’s Adventure has been left off the list. Sadly the park does not really offer anything outside of your standard options. It is really interesting that the park does not capitalize on the cherry region and offer more options with the tart fruit. We would expect to see many if not all of the menu items from the 2021 Cedar Point Frontier Festival a staple at Michigan’s Adventure.

If we are talking about more missed opportunities, we are also sort of surprised to see nothing from the managed Gilroy Gardens park in California, which is synonymous with garlic.

Is All-Season Dining Worth the Cost?

Is All-Season Dining Worth the Cost

We love getting your questions! Often times when asked on social media, the question can be answered in a sentence or two. Other times, your question is the perfect idea for a new article.

Today, Jason writes in and asks how many times would he need to use an all-season dining plan to make it worth the cost?

All-Season dining plans vary in price depending on when you purchase them in the season, and even vary per park with the exception of Platinum dining. At the end of 2015 when 2016 season passes became available, the All-Season dining plan at Cedar Point was $87 for regular season passholders and $99 for Platinum members. Today (June 2021) they are $132 (Gold and Platinum dining plans) at Cedar Point. Keep in mind each individual park offers different price points of dining plans based on their level of season passes. The only exception is the Platinum dining plan is the same at all Cedar Fair parks. While prices CAN increase more as the season goes on, keep in mind it is always better to buy earlier than later to save the most money and to use the plan more often.

Now onto meal plan options. All-Season dining plans do not include a drink. On average, dining plan meal options without the drink cost roughly $8-15. So for calculation purposes, let’s go with $10 for a dining plan meal.

Using the meal plan pricing, that means your average break even point is roughly 9-17 meals. At two meals per day (4 hours apart), within 5-9 visits your dining plan will break even.

These calculations do not include the 10-20% Platinum pass food discount available at the parks for use when purchasing food outside of a meal plan. If you factor in the Platinum discount, your breakeven point goes up to 10-19 meals dependent on the park discount and food selected.

So before buying the All-Season dining plans, you definitely need to consider how many times you will be going to the parks.

Our home park is Cedar Point, and before they had even opened, we had already used our passes for several days at each of Knott’s Berry Farm, Carowinds, Kings Dominion, and Kings Island. By the time the GateKeeper started to fly, we were already ahead of the game, especially considering we renewed and purchased our All-Season dining plans in the fall at the lowest price point.

All of this is also assuming you already planned on eating at the park and paying a higher premium for food. If you consider that a meal may only cost the park a couple dollars in time and material and you could pack a lunch and keep it in your vehicle for the same amount, than the dining plans may not be for you.

For us and the many that do purchase All-Season dining plans, the little bit of up-front cost far outweighs the time and effort that would be required to always pack a picnic and then having to walk all the way back to the vehicle. When you already pay money to get into the parks, time is money and the hour that it takes to walk back, eat, and then walk back in could have been an extra ride or two on your favorite attractions.

All-Season dining plans are also a good “excuse” to not make dinner. On nights where you feel tired and do not have the energy to cook, making a trip to your park knowing that dinner is already waiting for you is a fantastic motivator.

So, Is All-Season Dining Worth the Cost?
